Your network is only as stable and secure as its weakest link
Have dedicated workstations you use for 3D design, complex simulations, or other CPU-heavy tasks?
Seeing as a small glitch could wipe out months of work, every sysadmin worth their salt (read, you) has a monitoring system in place to keep an eye on user activity like logins, and network performance.
But you should be including every workstation connected to your network into your monitoring environment. Even those your employees work on day-to-day.
After all, most data breaches can be traced back to actions taken at an employee computer – insider threats or genuine mistakes such as clicking links on social media. And, with remote work increasingly the norm and remote team members accessing sensitive data from anywhere, the risks to data security (and the security of your network) have never been higher.
Paessler PRTG makes it easier to identify suspicious activity, prevent data breaches, and run a faster, more stable network. Our network monitoring solution’s preconfigured sensors track key health stats throughout the workday (and even at the evening, weekend, and other idle times).
And, custom automations alert you when there are problems, making it easier to troubleshoot and fix issues, ensure a more secure work environment, and keep your network running smoothly, even if you have a mostly remote workforce.
PRTG makes workstation monitoring as easy as it gets
Custom alerts and data visualization let you quickly identify and prevent errors, data security issues, suspicious activity, insider threats, and other problems with employee computers.
4 reasons why to choose PRTG as your workstation monitoring tool

Real-time monitoring for on-premises and remote workstations: PRTG in action
Our workstation and employee computer monitoring software has a comprehensive range of preconfigured sensors for pinpoint-accurate monitoring of every parameter that could affect your network's security and performance, for example:
- Several SNMP sensors, including ones for monitoring CPU load, memory, traffic, Windows services, and even printers
- A sensor for monitoring the impact of specific Windows processes and applications on a workstation's performance
- Sensors for monitoring storage systems, including Storage Area Networks (SAN) and network-attached storage (NAS)
- Sensors for monitoring reachability and response times, also from different locations world-wide
- Manufacturer-specific sensors for monitoring workstations made by big brands like Dell, Microsoft, HPE, and Lenovo
- Linux and Unix-specific sensors for keeping an eye on Linux hardware and software via SNMP or SSH

PRTG comes with more than 250 native sensor types for monitoring your entire on-premises, cloud, and hybrid cloud environment out of the box. Check out some examples below!
SNMP Traffic v2
The SNMP Traffic v2 sensor monitors bandwidth and traffic on a device. It can show the following:
- Number of incoming and outgoing broadcast, multicast, unicast, and non-unicast packets
- Number of incoming and outgoing discards and errors
- Total, incoming, and outgoing traffic
- Number of incoming, unknown protocols
SNMP Hardware Status
The SNMP Hardware Status sensor monitors the status of a server's hardware component. It can show the following:
- Number of errors
- Hardware component status
WMI Battery
The WMI Battery sensor monitors the available capacity and the state of connected batteries or uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) of a Windows-based device. It can show the following:
- Battery health and status
- Estimated remaining charge
- Time until the battery is empty
- Time until the battery is fully charged
- Voltage
Windows Process
The Windows Process sensor monitors a Windows process via Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) or Windows performance counters. It can show the following:
- Average and total CPU usage
- Number of instances
- Number of handles and threads
- Private bytes
- Working set
SSH Disk Free
The SSH Disk Free sensor monitors the free space on disks of a Linux/Unix system using Secure Shell (SSH). It can show the following:
- Free space
- Total space
SSH Load Average
The SSH Load Average sensor monitors the load average of a Linux/Unix system using Secure Shell (SSH). It can show the following:
- Average system load within a 1-minute, 5-minute, and 15-minute interval
- Downtime

Workstation monitoring: FAQ
What is a workstation?
Workstations are special computers that are used to perform tasks that would overwhelm conventional computers. Among other things, these tasks include the design of complex 3D models and computationally intensive simulations. For this reason alone, workstations must be monitored around the clock. After all, a glitch in one of these high-performance machines can have a serious impact on a company's operations and productivity.
What is PRTG workstation monitoring?
PRTG is a proprietary software tool that tracks the health and performance of servers, physical and logical drives, virtualized environments, employee computers, and other devices connected to your network. Available for on-premises servers or as a cloud-based solution, it can monitor unlimited local devices, virtual environments, and remote desktops, bringing critical system data together in one simple, intuitive interface you can access from anywhere: at the office, at home, or on the go.
Some of my workstations run on Linux / Unix. How do I monitor them?
PRTG’s functionality extends to preconfigured Linux-specific sensors you can use for monitoring user activity, device status, availability, and other performance metrics on workstations that run on Linux. You'll still need to install a PRTG core server on Windows. But, once that's done, you can use our new multi-platform probe that also runs on Linux/Unix and macOS systems. Alternatively, if your network runs exclusively on Linux, try our fully Linux-compatible hosted solution.
Can I monitor workstations remotely?
Yes. PRTG monitors remote desktops, workstations, and employee computers using a system of remote probes that are in constant communication with a central hub – your PRTG core server. Install the probes close to the endpoints of the remote desktops, workstations, or employee computers you want to monitor. The probes gather data on the metrics you’re tracking and report back to the core server, which organizes the data into dashboards you can look at to check the health of your organization's entire network at a glance and create detailed reports from.
Does PRTG track employee productivity?
No, Paessler PRTG is not an employee monitoring software. While many organizations may look for solutions to track employee productivity and remote workers, monitor employee performance, or use tracking software during work from home, PRTG focuses exclusively on network monitoring.
It provides IT teams with tools to ensure your organization's network remains secure and performs at its best, regardless of whether employees are working from the office or remotely. PRTG does not measure metrics like idle time, keystrokes, or engage in any form of productivity monitoring or productivity tracking. Instead, it’s built to monitor servers, devices, and network traffic, not your employees. Our priority is the health of your network, not the minutiae of your employees' workday activities.
What is a sensor in PRTG?
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive.
On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
