Monitor Dell: FAQ

What is Dell monitoring?

Dell monitoring refers to the tools, software, and services needed to monitor and manage the performance, health, and security of Dell hardware and IT infrastructure. The goal is to ensure that Dell systems operate efficiently, identify and address potential issues proactively, and maintain optimal performance and functionality of Dell environments.

Why should I monitor my Dell infrastructure?

Monitoring your Dell infrastructure is crucial for several reasons:

1. Proactive issue detection

  • Monitoring tools can detect potential hardware or software issues before they become critical.
  • Identifying potential issues early enables you to take preventive actions, reducing the likelihood of system failures.

2. Performance monitoring

  • Monitoring performance metrics helps in optimizing resource usage, ensuring that your infrastructure is running efficiently and not overburdened.
  • By analyzing performance data, you can make informed decisions about tuning and configuring your systems for optimal performance.

3. Security enhancements

  • Continuous monitoring helps in identifying security threats and vulnerabilities in real-time, allowing for prompt action to mitigate risks.
  • Regular monitoring ensures that your systems comply with security policies and industry regulations.

4. Cost savings

  • Proactive monitoring and maintenance reduce the likelihood of unplanned downtime, which can be costly in terms of lost productivity and revenue.
  • By optimizing resource usage, you can avoid unnecessary expenditures on additional hardware or cloud services.

5. Enhanced user experience

  • Ensuring that your systems are running smoothly and efficiently enhances the experience for end-users, leading to higher satisfaction and productivity.
  • With Dell monitoring tools in place, IT teams can quickly identify and resolve issues, minimizing the impact on users.

Which Dell systems can PRTG monitor?

PRTG is comprehensive network monitoring and network management software that runs on Windows and Linux systems and that can basically monitor every piece of Dell Technologies firmware that supports SNMP and offers respective MIB (Management Information Base) files. We also offer preconfigured sensors for the following Dell servers and storage systems:

  • Dell PowerEdge
  • Dell EqualLogic
  • Dell PowerVault MDi
  • Dell EMC Unity

How does PRTG monitor Dell systems?

Dell sensors in PRTG are based on SNMP or REST technology. For Dell server sensors, you must first install the Dell OpenManage Enterprise and activate SNMP there. As an alternative, you can also run your monitoring via the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC), or, for Dell EMC Unity systems, access data via the REST API.

What is a sensor in PRTG?

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive.

On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

PRTG the multi-tool

PRTG: The multi-tool for sysadmins

Adapt PRTG individually and dynamically to your needs and rely on a strong API:

  • HTTP API: Access monitoring data and manipulate monitoring objects via HTTP requests
  • Custom sensors: Create your own PRTG sensors for customized monitoring
  • Custom notifications: Create your own notifications and send action triggers to external systems
  • REST Custom sensor: Monitor almost everything that provides data in XML or JSON format

We asked: would you recommend PRTG?
Over 95% of our customers say yes!

Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins.
