What is PRTG remote work monitoring?
PRTG is a proprietary software tool that takes the effort out of ensuring your network always performs at its best. Available for Windows- (and Linux!)based on-premises servers or as a cloud-hosted solution, it's capable of monitoring unlimited local and remotely-connected devices, bringing critical system data together in one simple, intuitive interface you can access from anywhere: at the office, at home, or on the go. Unlike some remote employee monitoring tools, PRTG focuses purely on network performance and security, not on tracking individual employees during their workday.
How does PRTG monitor remote devices?
PRTG uses a system of probes that constantly communicate with a central hub – the PRTG core server – via specific protocols. PRTG supports for example SNMP, WMI, Windows performance counters, flow technologies, including NetFlow, sFlow, IPFIX, and jFlow, SSH, HTTP and HTTPS, and many more. The central PRTG server then brings the collected data together in fully customizable, easy-to-read dashboards you can view from one single location.
Contrary to remote employee monitoring software, PRTG is designed to improve network visibility, not to monitor employee time or track productivity levels.
Does PRTG track employee productivity or activities?
No, Paessler PRTG is not an employee monitoring software. While many organizations may look for solutions to track employee productivity, monitor employee activity, or use tracking software during work from home, PRTG focuses exclusively on network monitoring.
It provides IT teams with tools to ensure your organization's network remains secure and performs at its best, regardless of whether employees are working from the office or remotely. PRTG does not measure metrics like idle time, keystrokes, or engage in any form of productivity monitoring or productivity tracking. Instead, it’s built to monitor servers, devices, and network traffic, not your employees. Our priority is the health of your network, not the minutiae of your employees' workday activities.
How does PRTG differ from remote employee monitoring software?
PRTG is not intended for remote employee monitoring, as a time tracking software, or as an work-from-home employee computer tracking tool. Instead, it specializes in monitoring network performance, making sure your connections are secure, and optimizing bandwidth use. PRTG will not track employee time or a team’s performance, log keystrokes, or monitor social media activity, nor does it provide reports on productivity levels or assist in invoicing. With PRTG, you can focus on keeping your network robust and responsive, whether employees work from home or in the office.
What is a sensor in PRTG?
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive.
On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
