Customizable alerts and data visualizations let you quickly identify and prevent potential issues with network availability, health, and performance.
Time is of the essence
Enterprise networks are like a big city's road system. You constantly have to keep a watchful eye, especially during rush hour. Blink, and, before you know it, the slow-moving Mini has caused complete gridlock.
Paessler PRTG helps IT teams make sure that doesn't happen. Our all-in-one network monitoring tool gives you complete, accurate, to-the-minute data 24/7, so you can take proactive action and easily optimize performance on the fly.
Right here, right now: Why use PRTG as your real-time monitoring tool
Comprehensive monitoring
Continuously track availability, bandwidth, network traffic, hardware parameters, and more from one place. PRTG monitors all your devices, applications, and services round the clock, no matter if they’re in the cloud, on-premises, or virtualized.
Enhanced network security
Detect and respond to security threats as they happen. With PRTG, you can identify suspicious activities such as unauthorized access attempts, malware infections, or data breaches, and take immediate action to mitigate them to prevent further harm to your organization.
Automatic alerting system
No more IT emergencies. Pick your preferred warning and error thresholds, and PRTG will email, text, send an in-app notification, and use other alerting means when you're at risk of going under or over. This way, you can fix the issue promptly and keep your network smooth and stable.
Complete customization
PRTG is designed to work out of the box, but flexible and versatile enough so you can set it up the way that makes most sense for you. Our drag-and-drop map designer even lets you create your own network maps and dashboards, so you can view the status of your IT infrastructure at one glance.
Monitoring for compliance
Many industries have regulatory compliance requirements that demand real-time monitoring of network activities to ensure data security and privacy. Monitor your network in real time with PRTG, and demonstrate compliance with these regulations to avoid potential fines or penalties.

Monitoring in real time: FAQ
What is PRTG real-time network monitoring?
PRTG is a proprietary software tool that tracks the health and performance of every component that forms part of your network. Available for on-premises servers or as a cloud-hosted solution, it's capable of monitoring unlimited local, remote, and virtual network devices, bringing critical system data together in one simple, intuitive interface you can access from anywhere: at the office, at home, or on the go.
Why is monitoring my network in real time important?
Monitoring your network in real time is important for several reasons:
- Security: Real-time monitoring enables you to spot and address security threats as they take place. By keeping a constant watch, you can quickly catch suspicious activities such as unauthorized access attempts, malware infections, or potential data breaches.
- Performance: By monitoring network traffic in real time, you can identify performance bottlenecks and issues that may be impacting the speed and reliability of your network. This enables you to proactively address these issues before they escalate and affect user experience.
- Resource utilization: Real-time monitoring helps you track resource utilization such as bandwidth usage, CPU, memory, and disk usage. This information is valuable for capacity planning, ensuring optimal resource allocation, and identifying any resource-intensive processes that may be affecting overall network performance.
- Compliance: Numerous industries enforce regulatory compliance standards that make ongoing monitoring of network activities to uphold data security and privacy mandatory. By actively monitoring your network, you can show that you comply with these regulations and avoid potential fines.
- Troubleshooting: When network issues occur, real-time monitoring provides valuable insights into the root cause of the problem, allowing you to quickly identify and resolve issues before they impact users or business operations.
Which real-time network-monitoring protocol should I use?
It depends. And, no, we're not trying to dodge the question:
- SNMP is the most widely-used method, because it's super-easy to configure, gives you an overview of the traffic across your whole network, and can also monitor individual ports.
- Packet sniffing is great if you want to filter network traffic. For example, you want to see traffic by IP address, port, or protocol.
- Flow technologies also have extensive filtering options but are gentler on your CPU load.
- SSH is a great technology for monitoring your Linux network.
- And WMI is ideal for monitoring Windows servers and workstations.
My organization's network runs on Linux. Can I still use PRTG?
Yes! The central PRTG server can only be installed on a Windows server. But, once you've installed the PRTG server, you can use the brand-new multi-platform probe that also runs on Linux. With this probe, you can monitor and manage your complete IT infrastructure from your Linux system.
What is a sensor in PRTG?
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive.
On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
PRTG: The multi-tool for sysadmins
Adapt PRTG individually and dynamically to your needs and rely on a strong API:- HTTP API: Access monitoring data and manipulate monitoring objects via HTTP requests
- Custom sensors: Create your own PRTG sensors for customized monitoring
- Custom notifications: Create your own notifications and send action triggers to external systems
- REST Custom sensor: Monitor almost everything that provides data in XML or JSON format
