How it works: PRTG's IP SLA-monitoring capabilities explained
PRTG's preconfigured Cisco IP SLA sensor queries data from any IP SLA-compatible device using SNMP. It can continuously track the following parameters:
- ICPIF (Calculated Planning Impairment Factor), which measures how much VoIP voice quality has been impacted
- MOS, or mean opinion score: another measure of VoIP video and audio quality where five is the best and one is the worst
- Packet loss packet delay, and packet reordering
- Average VoIP jitter
- Average latency
- DNS and TCP round trip time
- Transaction RTT
PRTG also has dedicated sensors that work with non-IP-SLA-enabled and non-Cisco devices:
- The QoS (Quality of Service) One Way sensor, which tracks the quality of a network connection between two probes
- The QoS (Quality of Service) Round Trip sensor, which tracks the quality of a network connection between a probe and a target device at a connection's endpoint
- The SIP Options Ping sensor, which measures a SIP server's connectivity
- The SNMP Cisco CBQoS sensor, for monitoring network parameters using Cisco's Class Based Quality of Service feature

What is IP SLA monitoring?
IP SLA is a feature on Cisco devices such as Cisco IOS that enables you to track latency, jitter, packet loss, VoIP quality and other audio, video, and connectivity performance metrics in real time. Tracking these metrics makes it easier to spot (and fix) issues and optimize your resources. Just as important, it helps you make sure your ISP, VoIP vendor, and other communication services providers are meeting the minimum standards in their service level agreements.
How do I set up IP SLA monitoring in PRTG?
Setting up IP SLA monitoring in PRTG takes only a few minutes. Enter your IP SLA-compatible Cisco device's IP address and SNMP access data in PRTG, then add a Cisco IP SLA sensor and pick the parameters you want to monitor. Your device's current values should appear on your monitoring dashboard as soon as you're up and running.
My devices aren't IP SLA-compatible. Can I monitor the quality of VoIP calls another way?
Yes. PRTG also has several other sensors that can continuously keep an eye on key VoIP metrics like jitter, latency, response time, packet loss, and packet delay. These include Windows-compatible MOS monitoring sensors, and QoS monitoring sensors. You can also monitor quality of service not only via LAN, but also via VPN, Wi-Fi, and WAN by using PRTG remote probes.

What is a sensor in PRTG?
