Virtual Machine Monitoring using the XEN Virtual Machine Monitor
XEN Virtual Machine Monitor
PRTG's XEN virtual machine monitor is the perfect tool for monitoring virtual machines. A virtual machine, or VM, is a virtual computer. Such a machine does not consist of hardware, but rather of software. Virtual machines can be executed as runtime environment or operating system. A runtime environment is a model of a computer in software.
Virtual machines that perform as operating system can be implemented by software supported by hardware or firmware. Several virtual machines can run simultaneously on a physical computer. This helps you to save costs because you need less hardware.
Monitoring CPU and memory usage is an essential part of network troubleshooting. The XEN Virtual Machine sensor monitors a virtual machine on a XEN server via HTTP and RPC. The XEN management tool shows CPU usage and free memory. The XEN management software stores the monitoring data and analyzes the impact of the whole virtual infrastructure. And if a certain threshold is being crossed, you will immediately receive a notification.
But PRTG Network Monitor is more than only a XEN virtual machine monitor. It includes a lot of other network monitoring tools:
- For monitoring SQL server
- An ESX monitor including an ESX server monitor
- A Linux memory monitor for Linux monitoring memory
- To monitor exchange 2003 or later
- An uptime monitor
- And much more
