Keep your network firing on all cylinders with PRTG’s Microsoft server monitoring tool
Microsoft is the enterprise network's engine.
It provides core functionality such as Active Directory services, Exchange mail servers, and SQL servers, enables virtualization and cloud integration, supports mission-critical applications like IIS and SharePoint, and has built-in security, integration, and management features.
With so much riding on it, you can't afford not to keep a close eye on it. And, with Paessler PRTG, you can carry out thorough server performance monitoring, without having to remember manually checking the stats.
Our all-in-one network monitoring tool has preconfigured sensors designed specifically for monitoring CPU, RAM, virtual machines, and other key components of Microsoft-built software and hardware.
But, best of all, you can set it and forget it. Once it's up and running, it will track all your key health stats round the clock, alert you if something doesn't look right, so you can fix it straight away. and even restart critical services automatically if they've been stopped.
PRTG makes Microsoft server monitoring as easy as it gets
Custom alerts and data visualization let you quickly identify and prevent bottlenecks, Active Directory issues, low memory, and other causes of poor server performance.
All-in-one monitoring for Microsoft servers: Why Paessler PRTG
Plug-and-play setup
Get up and running in a few clicks. The automatic network discovery does most of the work, detecting and adding every Microsoft server and other network devices within your given IP range and assigning the appropriate sensors.
Powerful automations
Pick your preferred performance monitoring thresholds, and PRTG texts you, emails you, or sends an in-app notification if there's a risk of going under or over. Better still, you can set it so it restarts critical Microsoft services automatically if they've been stopped.
Proactive issue detection
Prevent bottlenecks, malfunctions, and other performance problems before they cause unplanned downtime and disruption. With round-the-clock monitoring and automatic alerts, nothing will fall through the cracks ever again.
End-to-end visibility
PRTG doesn't just monitor Microsoft servers. With preconfigured sensors and device templates, and the ability to create your own, it can track every parameter imaginable across your network's entire infrastructure, making it easier to keep your network stable and plan ahead.
What Microsoft server monitoring looks like in PRTG
Diagnose network issues by continuously tracking the availability, health, and performance of your Microsoft Windows servers. Show CPU load, memory, bandwidth, uptime, disk space, and other key performance metrics in real time. Visualize monitoring data in clear graphs and dashboards to identify problems more easily. Gain the overview you need to troubleshoot bottlenecks, low memory, or configuration errors.

How PRTG helps keep Microsoft servers and other Windows services running smoothly
If Microsoft made it, PRTG probably has a sensor that can connect to it seamlessly and track its various parameters to ensure it performs optimally.
Our monitoring software’s preconfigured Microsoft and Windows server-monitoring sensors can track, for example:
- Microsoft Exchange server stats using WMI or PowerShell
- Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2019 stats via WMI
- Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services) servers and the applications that use them, such as SharePoint and Microsoft Reporting Services
- Microsoft Hyper-V host hardware parameters
- Windows system uptime and update status via PowerShell
- Windows event logs and security center via WMI

Monitoring Microsoft servers: FAQ
Why is Microsoft server monitoring important for me?
Monitoring your Microsoft server environment is critical for ensuring seamless operation across your IT infrastructure. Microsoft servers handle essential processes for business applications, active directory services, databases, and file management. Keeping track of Windows server performance through infrastructure monitoring helps detect and address potential issues before they disrupt operations. This proactive approach not only maintains high availability but also optimizes resource use across your IT infrastructure to keep systems stable and efficient.
What is PRTG Microsoft server monitoring?
PRTG is a proprietary software tool that tracks the health and performance of Windows servers, Microsoft Exchange servers, and other servers, databases, and network hardware and software made by Microsoft. Available for Windows-based on-premises servers or as a cloud-hosted solution, it's capable of monitoring unlimited local, remote, and virtual devices, bringing critical system data together in one simple, intuitive interface you can access from anywhere: at the office, at home, or on the go.
Which technology does PRTG use to monitor Microsoft servers?
PRTG can monitor Microsoft servers via WMI, Windows performance counters, SNMP, or PowerShell.
WMI vs performance counters vs SNMP: What's the difference?
WMI, performance counters, and SNMP all have their pros and cons, and the approach you take will depend on your circumstances, particularly the size and complexity of your network and the resources you have available:
- WMI is a commonly used Microsoft standard which provides in-depth device data and has been an integral part of all Windows operating systems since 2000. But it can be slow and use up a lot of resources, which is why we recommend using not more than 200 WMI sensors per PRTG server, with a five-minute scanning interval.
- Performance counters are more efficient than WMI. But while they're great for monitoring individual servers, they can struggle when monitoring multiple network components at the same time
- SNMP is easy to set up, resource-light, and works on a variety of operating systems, not just Windows. But the data it produces isn't as detailed as what you'd get from WMI or performance counters.
Can PRTG monitor a mixed server environment with both Microsoft and Linux servers?
Yes, PRTG is fully equipped to monitor a mixed server environment that includes both Microsoft and Linux servers. While it excels in monitoring Windows server performance through protocols like WMI, SNMP, and performance counters, PRTG’s flexibility extends to Linux and other platforms with the multi-platform probe, allowing you to have a unified view of your IT infrastructure. With this cross-platform support, PRTG provides comprehensive infrastructure monitoring to give you full visibility and control over your entire server environment.
What is a sensor in PRTG?
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive.
On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
