PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Individual network auditing tools vs. PRTG

Icon search

Individual network auditing tools & methods

Many tools exist for performing a network inventory or audit, including Network Inventory Advisor, Spiceworks, Total Network Inventory, Lansweeper, Open-Audit, and Emco Network Inventory.

In addition, network administrators often run a quick command line check first (for example via a ping query, traceroute, or netstat) to perform a network scan and get an overview or solve a specific problem.

However, with these tools, solving a specific problem can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The fundamental problem often lies elsewhere, as many networks are not monitored on a permanent basis and real network management doesn’t exist.

This leads to disruptions, critical errors, and for sysadmins, the feeling they have lost all control of their networks.

Network monitoring and auditing with PRTG

Paessler PRTG is a centralized network monitoring tool, which is better at keeping disruptions and downtime to a minimum by monitoring your entire network 24/7. This includes hardware, applications, bandwidth, network traffic, and more.

You’re promptly notified if a server, switch, or router is causing a problem so you can quickly take action to keep your network in tip-top condition.

Plus, setup is easy since all devices within a specified IP address range are scanned and added automatically. PRTG’s continuous monitoring makes future network audits obsolete.

6 reasons why to choose PRTG as your network auditing tool

Get a comprehensive, all-in-one solution

Tired of a mishmash of network audit and network monitoring tools? PRTG is a centralized tool for monitoring and auditing your entire IT infrastructure.

It uses standard technologies like SNMP, WMI, SSH, flow, or packet sniffing, and more, and is compatible with all the biggest manufacturers, including HPE, Cisco, or Dell.

Improve the performance of your network

PRTG lets you quickly identify loopholes. Network monitoring is essential for improving the performance parameters of your network.

When the network runs more smoothly, your coworkers and customers are happier and the support desk receives far fewer complaints. As availability improves, so does uptime, while downtime decreases.

Keep an eye on everything from anywhere

PRTG keeps a constant eye on your network devices, applications, and traffic. Our software is available for web and desktop, and comes with free apps for monitoring with mobile devices while on the go.

And thanks to PRTG’s customizable alerts, you won't have to waste a single second wondering if everything is OK. PRTG is like a pair of eyes that never loses sight of your network.

Enhance the overall security in the network

PRTG helps you make your network more secure. Among other things, it monitors firewalls, servers, open ports, and access points.

You’ll notice suspicious behavior like unusual traffic or data breaches and receive an alert if security updates have not been performed. If a critical error arises, PRTG lets you exclude a number of possible causes.

Use preconfigured sensors or create your own

PRTG gives you access to over 250 preconfigured sensor types for monitoring the health and performance of hardware, applications, cloud services, the quality of service of your VoIP, and more.

You can also easily create customizable, user-defined sensors which exactly suit the needs and requirements of your organization’s IT infrastructure.

Generate customizable, in-depth network reports

PRTG monitors your network over long stretches of time. You can therefore run analyses to identify any changes that may not be obvious in the short term.

Create custom reports manually or on demand. These reports are easy to understand for both department heads and those with little technical expertise.

Network Audit: FAQ

What is a network audit?

A network audit is a systematic examination of a computer network's infrastructure, operations, and performance. It involves evaluating various aspects of the network to ensure that it is operating efficiently, securely, and is meeting regulatory compliance. Network audits can be conducted internally by an organization's IT team or externally by a third-party auditor.

How can network monitoring help with network audits?

Network monitoring tools like Paessler PRTG can help you with your network audits as follows:

  • Inventory assessment: Document all network devices (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, servers).
  • Network mapping: Map out the network topology to understand the connections and interactions between devices.
  • Security evaluation: Assess the implementation of security measures (e.g., firewalls, intrusion detection systems), check for vulnerabilities and potential points of attack and unauthorized access, and review user access controls and permissions.
  • Performance analysis: Monitor network traffic and usage patterns, identify bandwidth bottlenecks and areas of poor performance, and evaluate the capacity and scalability of the network.
  • Configuration review: Examine the configuration settings of network devices and ensure that network configurations follow best practices and security guidelines.
  • Recommendations and reporting: Use historical data reports to provide actionable recommendations for improving network security, performance, and compliance.
Can PRTG do a network security audit?

PRTG does help to make your network more secure, but it is technically no cybersecurity software. It monitors firewalls, servers, ports, and more, and will alert you to unusual traffic as well as needed security updates to identify potential security vulnerabilities or even security threats proactively. If a critical error occurs or a cyberattack happens, PRTG helps you troubleshoot and mitigate the consequences.

However, PRTG is unable to actively protect your network from attacks the same way as security software. What’s more, a security or IT security audit has its own standards, guidelines, and procedures.

What is the difference between network audit and assessment?

While both a network audit and a network assessment aim to evaluate the state of a network, they differ in scope, focus, and objectives.

  • Network audit: A network audit is typically more comprehensive and detailed. It involves a thorough examination of the network's infrastructure, configurations, security measures, and compliance with standards and regulations. Audits are often conducted periodically, such as annually or bi-annually, or triggered by specific events like regulatory requirements or security breaches. Their outcome are usually detailed network audit reports.
  • Network assessment: A network assessment is usually less detailed than an audit. It provides an overview or high-level evaluation of the network's performance, security, and capacity. The primary focus is on identifying areas for improvement in performance, scalability, and overall network health. It is often used to inform strategic decisions about network upgrades or expansions.
What is a sensor in PRTG?

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

We asked: would you recommend PRTG? Over 95% of our customers say yes!

Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
