PRTG makes data center power monitoring as easy as it gets
Custom alerts and data visualization let you quickly identify and prevent data center downtime, and optimize energy costs.
Keep your data center powered up 24/7
When data centers are a part of your network, monitoring your UPSs, PDUs, and other power-related systems is a critical IT function. A downed data center because of electrical power usage spikes or power failures can be disastrous. Data center power monitoring with Paessler PRTG raises the bar on your DCIM strategy and takes the worry out of managing power consumption across your facilities, helping you keep your network plugged in and powered up.
Turn the sparks up or down
Sags, surges, and drops are the abnormalities that fry your sensitive IT equipment and drive up operating costs in your data center.
PRTG continuously monitors power consumption, voltage, and currents to identify such abnormalities so that you can take quick action – for example shifting power loads or activating data center backup systems like uninterruptible power supplies.
Mind your P’s, Q’s, and PDUs
As any facility manager knows, data center management is all about the P’s, Q’s, and PDUs. PRTG monitors your [P]ower, watching consumption and distribution. Use PRTG to help you maintain the [Q]uality of the power going out through rack PDUs, redundancies, network devices, and failovers.
Finally, mind your power distribution units in real-time, with metrics on power loads and device status, and instant alerts when a malfunction or anomaly occurs.
Optimize your load balancing act
Balancing loads across data centers and colocation infrastructures can feel like a tightrope act. PRTG makes load balancing easier across the board, with real-time insights into power usage spikes, and visualization tools that make it easier to track workloads across your power, network, and computing resources.
Energy usage goes down, making your data center more cost-effective and sustainable.
Make capacity planning smarter
Smart capacity planning takes data-driven decisions, so you can accurately optimize your infrastructure for performance and scalability.
PRTG’s data center power monitoring provides rich historical data on power consumption, uptime, network traffic, CPU load, memory usage, and more. See consistent resource hogs and accurately plan for both sustainability and scalability.
Worry less about the environment
When you’re managing hundreds or even thousands of pieces of equipment, the physical environment of your data center matters – a lot.
PRTG includes monitoring sensors to help you keep conditions in check and also integrates with hardware sensors that track key environmental metrics like temperature, humidity, and air flow, giving you a complete view of your data center’s environment.
What data center power monitoring looks like in PRTG
Diagnose network issues by continuously tracking your data center power. Show power capacity, power quality, voltage, environmental conditions, and other key metrics in real time. Visualize monitoring data in clear graphs and dashboards to identify problems more easily. Gain the overview you need to troubleshoot power consumption issues and inefficiencies.
Start monitoring your data center power consumption with PRTG and see how it can make your network more reliable and your job easier.

Monitoring power in data centers: FAQ
What is data center monitoring?
Data center monitoring can be broken down into three categories:
- Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM): Simply put, DCIM refers to the management of a data center’s infrastructure. It includes the planning, management, and monitoring of all the IT systems and components installed in the data center. While PRTG isn’t a full DCIM software solution, it does provide DCIM-like capabilities.
- Environmental monitoring: Here, the temperature, humidity, and air-flow of the server room or individual server racks are monitored continuously. Special hardware and software measure the devices that cool the server room, including AC units, fans, and server cooling systems.
- Data center power monitoring: The first step in data center power monitoring involves the establishment and management of redundant and uninterruptible power supplies. A power monitoring system or tool then monitors these supplies in the data center.
Why is data center power monitoring important?
Even the slightest fluctuation in a power supply can cause damage to an IT system. Power failures and outages may be caused by many different things – some of which are not always avoidable. Power overloads (e.g., caused by lightning), vandalism, or cables gnawed by pets are all examples of issues that can’t be avoided. By monitoring power fluctuations and anomalies, you put the gift of immediate action into your team’s hands, shorten resolution times, and reduce the chances of equipment damage.
How does PRTG monitor power usage?
PRTG uses various sensors that use protocols such as SNMP, Modbus, or Redfish to monitor key metrics like UPS input/output voltage, battery status, remaining runtime, and system load. The data is processed in real time, and visualized through dashboards or reports.
What happens during a power failure?
PRTG provides real-time alerts in the event of power failures, high energy consumption, or voltage fluctuations, giving administrators the ability to respond quickly. It also allows custom notification settings for specific power thresholds.
What is a sensor in PRTG?
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive.
On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
