What is MRTG?

MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Grapher) is an open-source tool that monitors traffic on network connections mainly using SNMP. MRTG creates HTML pages with PNG images which provide a visual representation of this traffic.

Although useful, the software has its limitations. The MRTG installation on Linux/Unix operating systems is difficult and requires the use of command prompts. If you want to set up MRTG (or configure MRTG later), you need to use a complex MRTG configuration file.

The auto-discovery lets you ping a range of IP addresses in your subnet and automatically adds network devices and sensors to your monitoring setup.

You can visualize your monitoring data via customizable graphs and dashboards, which you can even share as HTML-based web pages.
