What is humidity in an IT context?
In an IT context, humidity refers to the amount of moisture present in the air within data centers, server rooms, or other environments housing IT equipment.
If the air is too dry (low indoor humidity), it can lead to the buildup of static electricity, which can cause electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD can damage sensitive electronic components in servers and other IT equipment. Excessive moisture in the air can lead to condensation, which can cause short circuits and corrosion of metal components, ultimately damaging the equipment.
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends that data centers maintain relative humidity levels between 40% and 60%. This range helps mitigate the risks associated with both low and high humidity.
What are the components of a humidity monitoring system?
- Humidity sensors: Devices that measure the amount of moisture in the air. These sensors can be standalone wireless sensors that connect for example via Bluetooth or WiFi, or integrated into environmental monitoring systems. They often measure relative humidity (RH) and sometimes temperature as well.
- Data loggers: Devices that record humidity levels over time. These can be standalone or part of a more comprehensive environmental monitoring system.
- Monitoring software: Software like Paessler PRTG that collects data from humidity sensors and data loggers, provides real-time monitoring, historical data analysis, and alerting. It can be installed on-site or accessed through cloud services.
