How to Add a Sensor Manually

There are three ways to add a new sensor to a device in PRTG. You can click on the blue “Add Sensor” button at the bottom of the page, or under the Sensors menu, select Add Sensor, or go to the device you’re interested in, right-click to bring up a context menu, and select Add Sensor. If you choose the button at the bottom of the page or the Sensors menu, then the next step is to select the device where you are adding the sensor. If you used the right-click and context menu, then you’ve already selected a device, so this step isn’t necessary. This brings you to a page with a list of all of the sensors that are available. If you already know what type of sensor you’d like to add, you can search for that sensor in this search box. For example, sensors that have to do with VMware, or with traffic. If you’re not sure what type of sensor you’d like, you can also search using these radio buttons, to narrow down the list to those sensors that might be interesting. For example, if this is a Windows server, and you’re interested in the CPU usage, then you can narrow down the list to those sensors that can show CPU usage on a windows machine. The sensors in grey are ones that you can add right now. If you see some sensors below, in white, then those are sensors that you can use once you’ve added the credentials into PRTG. The little coloured lines here give you an indication of how much load this sensor type generates for PRTG and the target machines. To add the sensor, click on the one you’d like. You can change the default settings here if you’d like, but for now we’ll leave them as they are. Click Continue, and PRTG will add the new sensor. The sensor status will be grey, which means unknown, until it has run for the first time. If you’d like to speed things up a bit, right click and choose “check now”.
And that’s it! Your new sensor is up and running.
