Paessler PRTG helps producing Mediterranean delicacies at Feinkost Dittmann
About Feinkost Dittmann
Feinkost Dittmann (Reichold Feinkost GmbH) has been a leading name in the world of premium deli products since 1901. The company specializes in Mediterranean delicacies such as olives, capers, anchovies, and antipasti. In Germany, Feinkost Dittmann has a production site in Taunusstein and a distribution & logistics center in Diez. It also has production sites and partners in Spain, Turkey, and Greece.
Foodstuffs are highly sensitive commodities. In order to ensure the quality of end products, a food manufacturer’s production and logistics processes must be error-free. Feinkost Dittmann has a production site in Taunusstein near Frankfurt and a distribution & logistics center 40 km away, in Diez. In addition, it operates various production plants, including a facility for processing capers, peppers, and other Mediterranean raw materials in Manisa, Turkey.
“Above all, we were immediately struck by the software’s simple installation and configuration. The price was more than reasonable, and the tool comes with a lot more features than we currently need, which gives us plenty of leeway for the future. PRTG also impressed with its variety of straightforward licenses.”
Mirko Frey-Kiesau, IT Manager, Feinkost Dittmann
Quality above all
The IT infrastructure at Feinkost Dittmann must always be available to allow for seamless communication (including between the various sites) and the successful completion of processes required for production and logistics. Mirko Frey-Kiesau is responsible for the IT in Taunusstein:
“In the past, we were continually plagued by isolated bottlenecks and failures. Often, we didn’t even realize there was a problem until a user told us – pretty embarrassing for us in the IT team and not so great for the company’s productivity. At the time, we relied on freeware and open-source monitoring tools to tell us if something was wrong in our network. However, since none of these solutions came with a full range of features, we had to simultaneously work with multiple tools. As a result, we spent entirely too much time monitoring manually.”
One monitoring tool for everything?
The IT team therefore began to look for an alternative, one that would be easier to administer and monitor several branches at once. Feinkost Dittmann wanted a comprehensive tool with a wide range of features to monitor its entire network (including all its sites) from one central location. The ideal tool would also come with straightforward licenses, easy setup and maintenance, and of course, a reasonable cost-performance ratio.
After a thorough online search and subsequent testing, Mirko Frey-Kiesau and his team decided on PRTG Network Monitor from Paessler AG: “Above all, we were immediately struck by the software’s simple installation and configuration. The price was more than reasonable, and the tool comes with a lot more features than we currently need, which gives us plenty of leeway for the future. PRTG also impressed with its variety of straightforward licenses.”
The Feinkost Dittmann IT department currently uses PRTG to monitor print servers, various managed Allied Telesyn switches and Cisco routers, and the entire cross-site domain network across three IP subnets.
PRTG offers a constant, comprehensive overview
Feinkost Dittmann uses HTTP, Ping, SNMP, and WMI sensors to monitor hardware availability, bandwidth, web pages, memory, hard disk space, and more.
PRTG remote probes have also proven extremely valuable to Feinkost Dittmann: installed at the various sites of the company, these probes send real-time monitoring data to the central PRTG instance in Taunusstein, where it is processed and evaluated.
In the event of a disruption, or if a predefined threshold value is reached (or exceeded), the responsible employee is notified automatically and can take appropriate action at once. Mirko Frey-Kiesau explains: “Thanks to prompt notifications from PRTG, we have been able to intervene many times and eliminate problems before our users had any idea what was happening. It doesn’t matter whether the problem occurs here in Taunusstein, in Diez, or in Turkey – with PRTG remote probes, we receive constant updates on all our locations and are alerted accordingly.”
Network optimization with PRTG
PRTG can do a whole lot more than just alert in the event of bottlenecks or failures. By collecting, archiving, and evaluating monitoring data, the software makes it possible to conduct long-term analyses of a network. Based on these analyses, optimizations can then be implemented by workers such as Mirko Frey-Kiesau in Taunusstein:
“Right from the start, PRTG allowed us to quickly react to bottlenecks and failures. Since then, we have made use of long-term monitoring to eliminate weak spots and improve the overall stability of our network.”
Conclusion
Mirko Frey-Kiesau concludes: “With PRTG, we’ve discovered a monitoring solution that fully covers our current needs while offering a great deal of potential for the future. Powerful, user-friendly, and cost-effective – it doesn’t get any better than PRTG for network monitoring.”
